Improvising on Your Guitar!

Guitar improvising is a fairly difficult skill but can be obtained if you dedicate enough time to the right things. First of all its very important to know your way around the neck. I suggest learning all five pentatonic positions along with all the seven modes. If you know these things and practice them enough until they are committed to memory, you are on your way to being a great soloist. Bruce Lee once said, you must honestly express yourself and to do this you need to let go of your thought and just feel out what you are performing. Here is a list of things you should practice to help you develop the skills needed to help you on your way as a great soloist.

1. Learn the 5 pentatonic positions and memorize them until they are like walking.

2. The same goes for the seven modes.

3. Learn as many guitar licks as you can , these licks can be thrown in anywhere during your soloing.

4. Know all your major scales and where they are on the neck.

5. Practice and learn the art of alternate picking, sweep picking, string bending, vibrato, developing a great guitar sound, and feedback control.

6. Get yourself some backing tracks in various keys to jam along to. When jamming along to your backing tracks try to let your self go and just listen to the notes that you play. Try not to plan what is next!

7. You could also create your own backing tracks if you have some recording capability.

8. As Bruce Lee said "Don't think Feel" This is a key concept in good improvising I personally have a bunch of backing tracks that I jam to everyday.

9. Record yourself and evaluate your progress. Keep striving to become the guitarist you want to be and you will achieve it.
