Choosing Your Pick

Choosing a pick (Also called plectrum) is different for everyone. Some guitarists like medium to thin picks while others like thick. Choosing the correct pick also depends on the instrument your using and the style music you are playing. If you are an acoustic player you may like a thin to medium pick which works better for strumming. If you play a lot of rock guitar solos you may like a smaller grip medium pick with a fine point. It really takes a lot of experimentation to decide the best pick for you. Some guitarists have chosen not to use a pick and just use their fingers instead. Its really up to you! When holding your pick most players hold the pick between the thumb and index finger.

Also, always get a couple extra picks because sooner or later you will lose your pick. Over the course of many years its hard to say how many picks you will lose but believe me you will lose them.

Types of Picks

There are many different materials used to make picks here is a list of just a few, plastic, nylon, tortex, stone, and other materials. You can spend a good amount on a real nice pick. Currently I use a pick made by The Red Bear trading Company. I absolutely love their picks as they are made of material that does not seem to wear out. Here is a link their page if you are interested in checking out the different picks they have available. Red Bear trading Company
